Christian Pamphlet: Rape… Sometimes, It's Her Own Fault

Recently, some female residents of Bristol, VA were handed a pamphlet titled Women & Girls by some, shall we say, “Godly folk”. The pamphlet asserts that females who refuse to dress modestly and instead choose to dress, oh I dunno, however the hell they want, are causing men to sin in their hearts and are therefore sinning themselves.

But wait, there’s more!

The pamphlet also suggests that female rape victims are partially responsible for rape:

“You may have been given this leaflet because of the way you are dressed,” it begins. “Have you thought about standing before the true and living God to be judged?”

“Scripture tells us that when a man looks on a woman to lust for her he has already committed adultery in his heart. If you are dressed in a way that tempts a men to do this secret (or not so secret) sin, you are a participant in the sin,” the leaflet states. “By the way, some rape victims would not have been raped if they had dressed properly. So can we really say they were innocent victims?”

Gee.  That’s a great question.  Let me think about that one…

YES!

Rape is a crime.  Rape is not sexy, nor is it even sex.  Rape is an act of violence committed by a criminal who is unable to control his criminal urges.  No matter the provocation, the only person responsible for rape is the rapist. End of story.

Or maybe they’re right. Maybe this elderly woman was wearing a sexy, skimpy nightgown to bed, and the burglar just couldn’t control the devil inside him. Or perhaps this two-year-old girl was dressed way to inappropriately for her age. Hows about we make all women wear a burka? Maybe then rape would cease, right?

Oh, wait

Let’s just put the kibosh on this right now. Rape is a very serious offense, committed by seriously disturbed individuals.  Rape is not some hot-button word that you can just throw on a pamphlet to pretend like you won an argument. Let me not even get into what the bible says about it.

Rape is not funny.  Rape is not trivial. And rape is not her fault.

  1. OK! My turn

1st this logic smacks of the same line of thinking the followers of Islam use to force women into submission and push them into wearing the Burka.
(the devil made be do it as an excuse of criminal action.)

Secondly Rape is not a "crime of lust". it is a crime. Rape is a violation of a person often worse than murder. It is a crime of power. It is always wrong.

  2. Damn I thought that it had been decided that rape victims aren't the problem but guess some haven't got that info. I have to agree with you and JestrBob on this, rape isn't a crime so much about the sex but about the power. What will be the next thing they will come up with to allow women to be forced to do something they don't want to? Sick and twisted people can always come up with ways to justify theirs and their friends actions.

I also see this as a way to move the blame from men to women for their inability to control their own thoughts. Yes as a guy I do find women dressed in some clothing more sexy then others. I can't blame them if I lust after them. Yes the girl wearing those skimpy dresses might be interested in hooking up but that in no way gives me any kind of permission to do anything more then say hi to her.

  3. Let's track down the pamphlet's author and go to his house with a ladder.

This is perfect. If we wait until his daughter is showering we just peek through the window. Once we catch a glimpse, it's rape party time and it's her fault!!!!

    Idiots.

  4. I was walking down the street the other day, and I saw a convertible car with the keys in the ignition, provoking my lust. And guess what? I totally didn't steal it!

If he didn't have a gun to his head, he had the choice to not rape her, even if she was butt-naked and standing on her head with her legs wide open.

Regardless of how provacative she dresses, No means No, Stop means Stop. As far as convicts are concerned the only ones lower than a rapist is a child molester in the prison world. If these people claim to be Christians they have the same mentality as Muslims have towards their women that get rape

  6. "Rape is an act of violence committed by a criminal who is unable to control his criminal urges."
No, (s)he IS ABLE to control his/her criminal urges. (S)he just refuses to. If a person is incapable of controlling urges, we call them "mentally disturbed," "insane."
Certainly a woman should use good sense in how she conducts herself. It doesn't mean that she is at fault for being victimized. A woman who is naked and voluntarily has a wrestling match with a naked man hasn't by that given her consent to sex. She's just stupid. Not at fault. Stupid. For being stupid she doesn't "DESERVE" to be raped. The rapist should be punished just the same as if he committed any other rape.
I have a natural and legal right to go anywhere I please (on public roads) at any time. But if I go into a high crime area at night, especially if I don't have a compelling reason to, I'm just plain STUPID. No one has a right to rob or murder me for being stupid. It's not my fault if I am attacked. But I'm still STUPID.
Really, stranger rapes (estimated 5%-10% of all reported rapes) are crimes of violence in which the perp is angry at the woman, some other woman, all women. Or stealing sex as part of another crime against the victim, like robbery. Or it's just that the victim looked vulnerable. The rest of the rapes are "friends and acquaintances" in which the perp may be at least partly motivated by sexual attraction. Nevertheless anger at being refused, rejected is likely a motive.
