Prop 8 Proponent Abandons Lawsuit Defense – "Fears for life"

Hak-Shing William “Bill” Tam, one of the lead proponents of Proposition 8 and official litigant defending the state in the current lawsuit, has asked to be removed from the suit because he fears for his and his family’s life.

In May, Tam was eager to be named a litigant. In convincing the judge he was worthy, he pointed out:

I dedicated the majority of my working hours between January 2008 and November 2008 toward qualifying Proposition 8 for the ballot and campaigning for its enactment.

However, as the lawsuit moves forward, beginning trial today, Tam isn’t so eager to defend what he worked so hard to enact.

In the past I have received threats on my life, had my property vandalized and am recognized on the streets due to my association with Proposition 8. Now that the subject lawsuit is going to trial, I fear I will get more publicity, be more recognizable and that the risk of harm to me and my family will increase.

Some question whether Tam’s motivation is to protect himself from additional publicity, or to keep a letter he wrote to members of his church out of the court record . . . a letter which can be used to demonstrate that Proposition 8 was not about protecting traditional marriage, but fueled at least in part by anti-gay bias. Tam wrote, in part:

One by one, other states would fall into Satan’s hands. Every child, when growing up, would fantasize marrying someone of the same sex. More children would become homosexuals.

Tam also commented during the campaign, addressing San Francisco’s Chinatown residents:

We hope to convince Asian-Americans that gay marriage will encourage more children to experiment with the gay lifestyle and that the lifestyle comes with all kinds of disease.

No anti-gay bias there.

Tam is still proudly affiliated with the Traditional Family Coalition, which hosts videos of the reclusive Tam speaking, along with images like this one:

He's very shy and doesn't wish to be recognized.

I find it astounding that this man believes that the intrusion into others’ relationships which he fought for tirelessly is now “too intrusive into his life” . . . and I’m more shocked that he refuses to rely upon Jesus to protect him from the evil, Satanic homosexuals. Does Tam lack faith?

If you’re not Barbara Walters, he’s not interested in talking to you. You scare him. Strangers are scary. [...]
