Huckabee Pummels Romney, Palin as Conservative Presidential Pick
Religion & Politics Sunday, September 20th, 2009Former Baptist pastor Mike Huckabee took more than twice as many votes than any other candidate in the Value Voters Summit straw poll, handily beating out Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, and others.
With 29% of the available votes, Huckabee demonstrated that his promise to “change the Constitution to meet God’s Law” is as popular with conservatives as it was when he took nine states in the 2008 GOP primary . . . if not more so.
As we’ve previously reported, Mike Huckabee is not some fringe whack job. Not only is he a former Baptist Pastor, he’s also a past Governor of Arkansas. He currently keeps pretty busy:
Huckabee now has his own TV show, Huckabee, Fox News’s highest-rated weekend program. He also broadcasts a thrice-weekly radio program, The Huckabee Report, on the ABC Radio Network. He has also authored more than half a dozen books
, mostly on conservative Christian politics.
The electric-guitar-playing, charismatic and charming Huckabee actively promotes Christian Reconstruction. He excoriates Republicans for moving toward the “mushy middle”:
Huckabee, a Baptist minister, asserts that in spite of polls and voting trends sharply to the contrary, the U.S. is a conservative country receptive to conservative, small-government Republican ideals such as banning homosexual marriages to protect the sanctity of heterosexual divorce, placing the Ten Commandments in schools, courthouses, and public buildings to ensure adherence to God’s Law, and charging victims of sexual assault for “rape kits” unless they wish to marry their rapists (per Biblical law).
Is Mike Huckabee the charming and intelligent version of Rush Limbaugh, minus the morbid obesity and rumors of sex tourism? He’s certainly equally dangerous an idealogue!
I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution. But I believe it’s a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that’s what we need to do — to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards so it lines up with some contemporary view. - Mike Huckabee, 2008 campaign rally
