Poll: Why Did God Smite Don Wildmon, American Family Assn Founder?

In what many will doubtless see as brutal irony, American Family Association founder Don Wildmon was hospitalized this weekend after being smitten by God with meningitis. He is presently in critical but stable condition.

AFA President Tim Wildmon said his 71-year-old father was diagnosed with the disease over the weekend. On Monday, Wildmon said his father’s condition had improved over the last 24 hours. Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.

Don Wildmon’s Christian right organization began as the National Federation for Decency in 1977, promoting family values and waging boycotts to combat what it deemed pornography and violence on television and in magazines.

Update: A special message from Tim Wildmon, Don’s son:

As has been reported, my dad, Don Wildmon, was admitted to the North Mississippi Medical Center over the weekend and diagnosed with a serious case of meningitis. He has been in intensive care for three days, but has shown some signs of improvement in the last 24/48 hours. We are taking it day by day. We thank all those who have let us know they are praying for Dad, our family and the AFA/AFR family. Dad has served the Lord for many years and he is in His hands.

If you would like to send a Get Well greeting or card to Don, address it to: Don Wildmon, PO Drawer 2440, Tupelo, MS 38803. Or, you can email your greeting to GetWellDon@afa.net. You may also check our website for regular updates on his progress.

In the meantime, AFA will continue to tackle the moral issues confronting our country and give leadership to those who have trusted us for over 32 years now. I will assume the day to day responsibilities of leading the ministry and thank God that he has blessed us with a very dedicated and loyal team of co-laborers here at AFA.

  1. Here’s something we can all agree on. Let’s all pray that Wildmon and all his friends join Jerry Falwell, and Oral Roberts, etc. ASAP.
If you don’t believe in prayer, it can’t hurt. If you do, and believe that’s heaven, then how can you object to THAT? And if you believe otherwise, then contibute for a wooden casket!

  2. Why would this even be a question? Why would God smite anyone trying to please Him with righteous work? Has anyone here noticed how well FORD MOTOR CO. is now doing ever since Don lifted the boycott on them? So, if someone gets a disease is it because God smited them?…OF COURSE NOT! Just look at the biblical book of JOB, he was a wonderful man, a near perfect man, and God allowed Satan to do all kinds of evil things to him and he still came thru all of the trials. Conclusion: Even those who love God with all their heart usually end up going thru many trials and tribulations. History shows the more good one is and does, the more he is attacted by the devil, this, my friends, is a provable fact.

    • So, Kevin, you’re saying that the devil smote Don Wildmon, and God stood back and allowed it, just like He did with Job.

Are you suggesting that Don Wildmon is the subject of another bet between God and Satan?

By the way, how is that AFA boycott against PepsiCo doing?

    • God didn't just stand back and watch as the devil smote Job – he was in on it. It was a cheap bet between God and Satan, remember?
No idea what the winnings were… probably beer money.

  3. You seem sick
