Poll: Sarah Palin Resigns as Alaska Governor. Why, Lord? Why?

Breaking News! Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has decided to step down, effective July 26! Check here for updates on this breaking story!

Palin announced earlier today that she would not seek re-election to the position of Governor. She later followed this shocking announcement with her resignation!

Two reasons are being speculated about. Is Palin stepping down to run for President in 2012? Or is she stepping down to free herself of the hail of attacks, accusations of corruption and ethics charges, which have bludgeoned her Governorship since the 2008 election cycle ended?

A few examples:

Palin’s Vengeful Streak

Palin’s Faked Pregnancy with Trig

and let us not forget Troopergate!

The speculation is starting:

Rolling Stone:

Sarah Palin has pulled the plug on her governorship. Before the end of her only term. At an impromptu press conference. At her house. On a Friday. Before the 4th of July. And refuses to answer questions.

This is not in keeping with a woman with presidential ambitions.

No. This has the hallmarks of a politician slinking away before the shit hits the fan.

Update: Videos here:

A clearly nervous Palin says she is taking “the right path for Alaska” instead of spending the rest of her term as a lame duck Governor. She alludes to a “full court press from the national level”, without clarification, and that she will “effect positive change outside government . . . on another scale, and make a difference for our priorities”.

She wants to pass the “ball for victory”, the ball representing smaller government, national security, and, of course, freedom.

Palin indicates that she made the decision some months ago, after polling the important people in her life — her kids — whom she asked whether she should work toward all our children’s future from outside the Governor’s office, or stay Governor. The responses were “Four yes, and one HELL yes.”

This makes me wonder how a President Palin would make other tough decisions. Things like, “Kids, should I nuke Iran today?”

Another Update: Salon article lists possible reasons for resignation.

Update from the Brad Blog:

Okay, I’ve now been able to get independent information from multiple sources that all of this precedes what are said to be possible federal indictments against Palin, concerning an embezzlement scandal related to the building of Palin’s house and the Wasilla Sports Complex built during her tenure. Both structures, it is said, feature the “same windows, same wood, same products.” Federal investigators have been looking into this for some time, and indictments could be imminent, according to the Alaska sources.

And more, same source:

It appears that the questions about Palin’s house and the sports complex made their way through the media and blogosphere during the campaign last October. “Glic” over at DailyKos has collected some of the notable coverage from back then, including these details from the Village Voice on 10/8/08 (follow link for details).

And more! This from the Daily Beast:

One logical place to start looking is the affair that has Alaska political circles buzzing: an alleged scandal centered around a building contractor, Spenard Building Supplies, with close ties to Palin and her husband, Todd.

Many political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002.

3 Responses to Poll: Sarah Palin Resigns as Alaska Governor. Why, Lord? Why?

  1. She probably quit because the Republicans knew she would lose them the 2012 election, so they told her to get out and shut up!

  2. seems like she probably didn’t want people to spend much time thinking about this since she announced it the Friday before July 4th

  3. Or maybe she is declaring her independance from the current entrenched hypocrites of both parties in order to fairly represent those of us who still believe in American values. Neither party represents the majority of Americans, think about it, when you vote these days, isn’t it just a choice of the better of two evils? By the way, you are a little slow here, there is no prid-pro-quo here, that myth has already been debunked by the FBI. Everyone in that area buys their construction material from the same place, Home Depot. Another premature orgasm eh?
