Huckabee Warns Against "Mushy Middle"

Paliban Daily: We keep track of religion’s forays into politics, so you don’t have to!

It’s not a sermon on American obesity, although that certainly is a subject leaders like Mr. Huckabee should be commenting on. No, Mike Huckabee is saying that the Republican Party needs to focus on conservative values, not “moderate” and be like the Democrats.
In a June 10 interview with the Associated Press, Huckabee had some choice words for those who want Republicans to move toward the middle.
I hear people who give advice that the Republicans need to moderate. They need to be a little more to the left. It sounds like advice that Democrats would give to us so that we’d never win another election ever. It’s when they move to the mushy middle and get squishy that they get beat!
While some Republicans in Name Only like Mindy McCain say that Republicans are losing touch with the younger generation’s values and need to be “Democrats Lite”, Huckabee (and Sarah Palin) take the opposite stance.
Huckabee, a Baptist minister, asserts that in spite of polls and voting trends sharply to the contrary, the U.S. is a conservative country receptive to conservative, small-government Republican ideals such as banning homosexual marriages to protect the sanctity of heterosexual divorce, placing the Ten Commandments in schools, courthouses, and public buildings to ensure adherence to God’s Law, and charging victims of sexual assault for “rape kits” unless they wish to marry their rapists (per Biblical law).
Historically, the way we’ve found our way back to winning, having clear convictions that are conservative and then when elected, act like it. In every election, when Republicans have had clarity of convictions and those convictions were conservative, they win.
And those Republicans have always maintained those clear conservative convictions once elected, which is why we now have a Republican-controlled House, Senate, and Presidency! Right?
Oh, wait . . .
Joining the rising chorus of Democrats and some Republicans, Huckabee slammed the Obama stimulus packages . . . including Obama’s $787B TARP package, which John McCain left the campaign trail to vote for and which George W. Bush signed into law during the 2008 election.
Republicans have culpability in that. There were some people who questioned whether I was really conservative. I don’t want to hear, ever, people ever again talk about how conservative they are if they supported that.
See, like all the Republicans who supported the bailouts, Huckabee was in favor of them before he was against them. But he’s against them now, because he has clear conservative convictions, which have become clear after he stopped supporting the bailouts he supported before his conservative convictions became clear.
Clear?
