VettinGate Continues: Hilda Solis
Just when you thought it’d be days before hearing it a second time . . . Hilda Solis brings us back to the new Obamantra, “I screwed up”. Seems the “highly vetted” Labor Secretary appointee has not only lobbied Congress, but lobbied herself.
Back in 2007, Solis was a board member and the Treasurer of American Rights at Work (ARAW), a Marxist-infiltrated labor group attempting to force unions down the throats of all Americans, even those who simply don’t want them.
[Note: A poll released today by LaborPains.org shows that 82% of Americans surveyed would NOT want their jobs to be unionized. I assume Wal-Mart workers were not in the study group.
Even pro-union groups come up with weak numbers. In a February 2007 article misleadingly titled "Do workers still want unions? More than ever!" Agenda for Shared Prosperity reports that "Given a choice between a union and no representation, 32% of nonunion workers reported that they would vote for a trade union in a representation election . . . In the sample as a whole, 44% of workers favored union representation." Yep. Anywhere from 1/3 to less than 1/2 of the working population want unions.]
In 2007, ARAW backed and Solis co-sponsored the deceptively-named “Employee Free Choice Act”. Had this passed, employees voting whether or not to bring a union into their place of employment would have lost their right to a secret ballot. That means those who did not want a union would have their votes known to those who did . . . with the potential for serious repercussions. Where’s the “free choice”?
Solis also co-sponsored the ARAW-backed “Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act”, intended to force states to permit public safety officers to form unions . . . and then go on strikes.
I expect that Solis and ARAW would happily sponsor the coming “Anti Dog-Eat-Dog Act” of 2009, originally suggested by one Ayn Rand in her novel about incompetent businesspeople, government bailouts, and economic collapse, America: 2009. Oops, Atlas Shrugged.
As treasurer of ARAW, Solis was responsible for approving expenditures for the organization, including the cost of lobbying legislators . . . on bills she herself co-sponsored. In other words, Big Honkin’ Conflict of Interest, not to mention a violation of House Ethics.
Why didn’t any of this come out in the Vaunted Obama Vetting Process? Well, it seems Ms. Solis “answered a question incorrectly” on her paperwork, conveniently forgetting her very recent history of approving lobbying expenditures and repeatedly violating the ethics rules she is sworn to uphold. Oops.
In Solis’ defense, the expenditures were tiny, and easy to overlook:
According to the Center for Responsive Politics and a review of the lobbying disclosure forms filed with Congress, ARW spent $110,000 in 2007 and $120,000 in 2008 on lobbying expenses. And what were the “[s]pecific lobbying issues” listed on the forms? They included the “Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 800/S. 1041)” and the “Public Safety /Employer-Employee Cooperation Act of 2007 (H.R. 980).” As treasurer of ARW, Solis would have approved the spending by ARW on lobbying other members of Congress on both of these bills she was sponsoring for passage.
The appointment of Solis isn’t a huge surprise, considering Obama was endorsed by American Marxist/Communist groups. Naturally, he’d pick one of his own, someone who wants to force all Americans into Marxist unions.
Obama has appointed a temporary “acting secretary” while the Solis matter is sorted out.
